If you are looking for buy an air mattress, is it imperative that you know that no one air mattress is going to fit every personal preference of every person. It's important for you to make a checklist of what you are specifically looking for so that you can narrow down between the hundreds of options out there.

Popular air mattress brands (Intex, Coleman and SoundAsleep) advertise similar benefits, so the customer reviews are where you will truly find out if the product stands up to the expectation put out there.

Remember, though, while you are looking through airbed reviews, that people will give a negative review if the color is not what they expected or if there was a hole in the box from the shipping and handling.

So do not simply look only at the star rating, but make sure to read why the airbed was given a negative review and really consider for yourself if you agree. This will make it possible for you to truly find the diamond in the rough and get the best air mattress for the best price.

Now, it is time to make your checklist.

Before you start your official search online or in store, make sure that you take time to think through these crucial questions to help narrow down your options and make your search less overwhelming and more personalized.

As you go through this list, write down your answers for a quick reference guide. Remember, no single air mattress is better than all others in all categories - or for all people. But by understanding your options and asking the right questions, you can find the best fit for budget and needs.

Here is a list of questions to think through:

  • Does it need to be lightweight or is a heavier, more sturdy model more what you need?
  • What is your budget? Are your looking for a cheap air mattress?
  • What is the most important thing for you: comfort, affordability, or durability? Or maybe even all three?
  • Do you plan to only use it for overnight guests or are you looking for a temporary bed for yourself?
  • How about material: is there a particular kind that you are looking for? Vinyl? PVC? Cotton?
  • What about the air pump- will it bother you if the pump is loud during inflation or do you prefer one that is silent?
  • What about the operation of the pump?
  • Do you prefer battery operated, manual, or electric?
  • Do you have a preference between a built-in or an external pump?
  • How many people do you need it to be able to accommodate?
  • What is the maximum weight it will need to hold?
  • What about storage- do you have ample storage space or only a small space for storage?
  • Do you want an air bed that was build for indoor or outdoor use? Do you need your air mattress for camping?
  • How soon do you need your new airbed?
  • Make sure to check out shipping speed vs. availability in store! How easy do you need it to be to get in and out of?
  • Do you require a taller airbed or is one closer to the ground going to work for you? And what size do you require - twin, queen or king?
  • Are you looking for an airbed that has a pillow top or one that requires a mattress pad?
  • Do you need it to be entirely waterproof or just water resistant?
  • Is there a certain brand that you are looking for? Serta? Coleman? Intex? SoundAsleep?
  • What kind of a warranty are you looking for? Make sure all of the parts are included in the warranty for at least one year.

Now that you have your checklist, where do you start?

Once you have your checklist prepared, you are ready to start looking online or calling around for an airbed that matches your unique and personalized needs.

It truly saves time and energy to either look online or call before you go! This way you are not spending hours in a store trying to find what you are looking for, and it also prepares you to know how much space in your vehicle you will need to transport your new airbed home.

Tips for searching

If you plan to search for your airbed online… first, start out by picking your top 3 preferences and typing it into your favorite search engine prefaced with the word “best”.

For example, if you are looking specifically for an air mattress that is designed for camping, fits 2 people, and is lightweight you would type in “best camping 2 person light weight air mattress” and see what comes up. It is likely that there will be a link that says something like “Amazon Best Sellers”, which is a great place to start because it has already narrowed down your search for you and will present you with the top 3-5 options that match what you are looking for.

From there you can pour through the reviews in order to check things like price, size, durability, firmness, pump-style, and anything else you want to know.

Once you have spent time doing your research, narrow down your list to the top 3 options and begin to eliminate based on preferences like color, material, size, etc. Hopefully, when you are all down you will have in front you the air mattress that is right for you!

If you plan to call stores… first, start by choosing a store like Sears, Bed, Bath, & Beyond, Target, or Wal-Mart which are all more likely to have a variety available. When you call, give them your top 3 specific needs and ask them what they have in stock that matches that.

For example, you might say, “Hi, I am in search of a queen size air mattress that is at least 18” tall and does not deflate during the night. Do you have anything like this in your store?” They will either say yes and be able to better direct you from there, or they will say no and you will need to move on to the next store.

You now have all of the tools that you need to make sure you pick the air mattress that is right for you.
